Romeo and Juliet at Duke of York's Theatre

Booking

Booking for shows is normally easy on the ATG website but because if the demand for this performance I was in a queue for at least 80 minutes, with thousands of people in front of me. Due to not opting for the wheelchair restricted views prices were expensive.

Access Ticket £125

Wheelchair Companion £25

Theatre Location

Excellent location in the heart of Covent Garden with lots of accessible restaurants close by.

If you are accessing the theatre from Trafalgar Square you need to walk on right side of St Martins Lane as there is no dropped curb on the left side. However when we left multiple cars were blocking the dropped curbs and we had to walk back up the street in the rain to cross over.

Theatre Access

Access to the theatre is via a front door. There is a flat access to the wheelchair spaces in the circle. Row D also has a transfer seat which we chose for this performance.

The bar is accessible but heavily congested during the inerval. The access host or a carer can easily access this on your behalf. You can also get drinks delivered to your seat via an app.

Access Host

The access host service was polite and showed us to our seats.

During the interval they were incredibly helpful informing me when the toilet was free and waited outside as I was unable to lock the door.

They assisted my carer with storage of my electric chair.

Seat and Staging

We sat in D3 and D4.

The view from the seats was excellent. You could see the whole statge and set. However it was two seats in from the end as the transfer seat wasn't available and required some manoeuvring. Choosing these seats was a bit more complicated than a standard wheelchair seat but worth it.

My find also had to place my electric chair in the foyer and collect it during the interval and at the end of the performance. This was fine for us but would be problematic to a solo person although I am sure the staff would accomodate you as best they could. â€‹

Toilets

The toilet was located at the opposite side of the theatre to our seats so during the interval I had to negotiate the very busy foyer. The access host helped with this but the toilet was occupied so I ended up blocking the queue for the ladies toilet.

However it was tiny. Barely big enough to fit a compact chair even after removing my footplates and with no turning space. It was not possible to lock to door once inside.

It would also be helpful in my opinion to have a radar key lock on the toilet as that way only individual's who need to access the toilet could.

I visited in July 2024 and all views expressed above are my personal opinion.

It was my second visit to Duke of York Theatre
