The Other Palace

The Other Palace was opened as St James Theatre in 2012 and was built on the site of the former Westminster theatre which was destroyed by fire on 2002. It was previously owned by Andrew Lloyd Webber and is currently owned by Bill Kenwright. It is located in the Victoria area of London close to the Victoria Palace Theatre and the Apollo Victoria Theatre. Buckingham Palace and Westminster cathedral are points of interest close by. It is has a main room seating 312 and a studio seating 120.

To access wheelchair tickets you need to have registered for the Other Palace access scheme. Click here for the link. I had already registered for their carer scheme. They can link to a Nimbus account so for easiest access you can register for a Nimbus card if you haven't already. All Nimbus application information can be found here . Although they also accept other various forms of supporting documentation.

Once you are registered you can book tickets via telephone, email, in person or online (but you need to log into your account before you search for tickets).

If you are eligible there is a free carer ticket and an access rate so the ticket prices were very reasonable.

The Other Palace also offer a variety of adaptations and assistances when booking tickets and visiting the venue. Full information can be found by contacting their box office on 020 7592 0302 which is available from 10am – 8pm Monday to Saturday and from 11am – 6pm on Sunday

Accessibility

Access Overview

The theatre is accessed via a main door with a ramp to the side. From the ramp the toilet and stalls are located at the opposite side of the lobby. The venue can get busy pre and post show but due to its small size the crowds can disappear quite quickly too. The wheelchair space is located at the very back of the theatre with level access from the lobby.

Access Host

There is no specific access host but the venue is very small so it's not really necessary. The usher will show you to your space which is along the back row. During the show an usher sits slightly to the side behind you which is handy incase you need any assistance.

Toilet Facilities

The accessible toilet was located right next to the ticket desk by the theatre door. It requires a radar key but staff have plenty of spares if you require one. It is a good size with space to side transfer.

Seat & View

The wheelchair park spaces are back of the theatre, at the far side of Row N, which is level access from the lobby. This area could fit two wheelchairs and two carers or ambulant disabled visitors. There is plenty of space and leg room because the seats are removable and there are no seats behind. However the rake is very steep and you are at the very back and top of the seating area so you do feel quite far away.

The view is generally good but the top of the stage is cut off by the circle overhang. Also if you have tall individuals sat in front of you then manoeuvring is necessary to get a view between their heads and if they stand you won't be able to see. Also There is a very, very bright light to the side of the space indicating the Row. In a normal Row this would be blocked by a chair but as the seats are removed it shines directly into your eyes. I tend to cover it with a bag or scarf.
